A long-awaited firmware update is now available to address AF performance with the leading, current-generation Fujifilm X Series APS-C and GFX mirrorless cameras.
The Japanese imaging and photography company has released Firmware updates across four X and one GFX cameras, including the X-T5, X-T50, X-S20, X100VI, and GFX 100S II.
Each of these Fuji digital mirrorless cameras has now received the following update:
The AF algorithm has been partially revised to improve focusing accuracy and subject-tracking performance.
While the firmware update description is far from explanative, it’s well known that the brand is working to significantly improve autofocus, subject detection, and tracking algorithms to meet photographers’ expectations.
Since the launch of the Fujifilm X Series, the brand has struggled to keep pace with the autofocus performance of other leading brands, such as Sony, Canon, and Nikon.
As more and more professional photographers consider Fujifilm a legitimate contender in the pro market, the brand must keep pace and offer comparable autofocus performance.
Below is a list of the Fujifilm cameras and the 19 December 2024 firmware version.
- Fujifilm X-T50 ver. 1.10 from Ver.1.02
- Fujifilm X-S20 ver. 3.10 from Ver.3.00
- Fujifilm X100VI ver. 1.20 from Ver.1.11/Ver.1.12
- Fujifilm GFX100SII ver. 1.10 from Ver.1.01
Whether the December firmware update delivers considerable or marginal gains in autofocus speeds, accuracy, and reliability remains to be seen.
Before this update, the new, entry-level Fujifilm X-M5 offered the best autofocus performance of almost any Fujifilm X or GFX camera.
In recent years, Fujifilm has spoken less about its renowned focus on “Kaizen” – continuous improvement.
Kaizen is a Japanese business philosophy that continuously improves products, support, consumer experience, staff engagement, and business practices.
