Insta360, a brand particularly known for its 360-degree action cameras, has teased the impending release of a new one, the Ace Pro 2.
According to the brand’s promotional teaser for the new device, it’s called “The Real Pro” and we assume that this alludes to some very powerful performance specs for its video niche.
Insta360 has been economical with specific details but according to the teaser video, which you can see below, the camera strongly follows in the footsteps of Insta360’s Ace Pro model action camera from November of 2023.
This previous model was quite impressive and delivered some particularly good panoramic video recording specs.
With the Ace Pro 2, what we’re almost certainly going to see is a successor to the Ace Pro, with some similarities, as the video from the brand indicates, but also a number of new features.
The video itself uses all kinds of visual tricks to conceal any really crucial details about the camera that might give away specific features, and it also doesn’t mention video resolution and other crucial specs.
However, given the specs of the Ace Pro and the physical similarities between that device and this impending successor, we can possibly expect the same or only slightly different Leica Super Summarit-A ASPH lens in the Pro 2. In the Ace Pro, this lens offered a 16mm focal length and a f/2.6 aperture.
The new camera will also probably feature a similar but slightly larger upward-flipping rear screen and a smaller front screen for selfies. In the Ace Pro, the rear screen was small but usable at 2.4 inches.
We also expect the Ace Pro 2 to have a rugged, weather-resistant design. This fits with the “Real Pros” narrative behind the camera and with the video showing the camera in the rain.
Where the Ace Pro 2 might really improve things is with its video recording and AI features. The Ace Pro offered a resolution of up to 8K at 24fps with a Type 1/1.3 sensor behind it. This also let it deliver 48MP photos (compressed pixels for a compact action camera).
The Ace Pro 2 will almost certainly go beyond these specs, with a slightly higher frame rate for 8K video and possibly even a slightly larger sensor.
In terms of AI, the Ace Pro includes features for editing, camera control and video capture. The Ace Pro 2 will at least modestly improve on these while likely including further AI tech, possibly for stitching panoramas together.
The current Ace Pro costs $329. The new camera will probably be a bit pricier than that.
Whatever the case may be, Insta360 is announcing a new camera on October 22 at 9 am ET, so we’ll know exactly what’s what soon enough.
