As of January 31st, American compact mirrorless camera fans can domestically buy their own edition of the Panasonic G100D, the upgraded version of the older Lumix G100.
The mirrorless camera, which was announced with little fanfare in Japan in December of 2023, was reported to be coming to the U.S. market in 2024 but without Panasonic USA yet giving a firm release date.
Now, it’s confirmed for a January 31 release in the USA and will probably come to other markets in the months that follow.
With the upgrade to the G100D, what sellers get is something called a “running change.” This means that older-model editions of the camera will be replaced with the upgraded newer edition by Panasonic as those old stocks expire.
For retailers and consumers, the difference between the newer and older models will be quite obvious since the newer G100D has wholly new hardware and also its own obviously unique SKU.
You can however still buy the original G100 for a nice discounted price of $548.
The newer version of the camera does offer more though. It’s only been modestly upgraded but among these improvements are a USB-C 2.0 port, and an OLED display instead of the older model’s LCD touchscreen.
The OLED display on the G100D has a lower resolution of 2.36 million dots as opposed to the 3.68 million of the older LCD screen, but with OLED being a far crisper display technology, it compensates for this.
Aside from these minor changes, the new camera is basically the same as the G100. This means the same 20.3-megapixel 17.3 x 13 mm Four Thirds MOS sensor, digital 5-axis image stabilization and an ISO range of 200 to 25,600.
Like the G100, the G100D also shoots at the same video resolutions of UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at 23.98/29.97 fps and 1920 x 1080p at 29.97/59.94 fps.
Finally, it can deliver continuous shooting at up to 10fps with its electronic shutter. With RAW shooting, this extends to only 20 frames but if you’re shooting in pure JPEG, the camera can stretch shooting to 480 frames.
The price of the upgraded G100D is going to be $747. This price is for a kit that includes the same G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 lens as is included with the $547 G100.
Whether you think the OLED display and USB-C 2.0 port are worth the extra $250 cost is a personal choice. In terms of photo and video quality, the two cameras are essentially identical.
