Google will let its Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 phones capture HDR images and videos directly inside Instagram as of March 4th and 11th.
This is a technical social-media friendly capacity that up to now has only been available through Samsung’s premium Galaxy S24 devices.
However, as Meta itself (owner of Instagram) confirmed way back in January of this year, Samsung wasn’t slated to be alone in offering it.
The social media giant mentioned that it was working with other Android device makers and with Apple (for iOS) to integrate the same feature.
For the sake of this feature update, Google will be updating its Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold phones so that their owners can shoot and post HDR videos and photos directly inside Instagram.
It may not seem like a huge deal to some fans of smartphone photography, but this ability will be a time-saver for users of these devices who want high-quality, rich-color image posting that’s as friction-free as possible.
Google will give the relevant Pixel phones mentioned above their HDR photo/video chops as of March 11th to users in the United States.
For users of these phones elsewhere in the world, the HDR feature became available much earlier, as of March 4th, curiously enough.
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 phones also offer the same technology for their internal Snapchat apps, but Google hasn’t mentioned offering HDR for this app. Apparently, Samsung gets to at least keep that as a competitive edge for now.
Google claims that its Pixel 7-Pixel 8 phones deliver 10-bit HDR through “stunning video with brilliant colors, brighter intensity, and higher contrast”. The company adds that with this update, users can now upload these HDR videos directly to their Instagram Reels.
The same direct posting to Instagram will apply to Ultra HDR photos taken through the Pixel phones in question.
For those of you who own a Pixel phone and use it for product, fashion, portrait, or artistic photo and video uploading right to social media, this update should be very useful as a time-saver.
