Sony’s ECM-L1 Lavalier Mic For Creators Is Here, But Not Cheap

For pro video users and videographers who work with Sony cameras, the company’s new ECM-L1 wired lavalier microphone is now available, but not cheap.

Sony’s new omnidirectional lavalier microphone includes plug-in power support through a 3.5mm mini plug and is designed with the brand’s own Alpha cameras particularly in mind, along with wireless microphone transmitters.

Basically, the ECM-L1 is designed for vloggers and video creators who want to conduct interviews or sound bites with high-quality audio from a device that’s durable for field use.

The microphone adapts the same technology as Sony’s other major microphone line, the ECM-77 models, but in a smaller package for easier handling.

The specific design details of the ECM-L1 include a brass capsule with a ceramic back plate for high sound quality and a cable that’s purposely designed to be thick for high durability. Unlike Sony’s ECM-77, this smaller mic foregoes XLR in favor of the above-mentioned 3.5mm plug.

With that said, the ECM-L1 supports plug-in power and can be connected directly to your camera of choice for more practical use in some field situations. It can, however, be connected to a wireless microphone transmitter or belt recorder in other contexts.

Another useful design feature of the ECM-L1 is that its 3.5mm plug is designed to lock into place, which will keep it from flying out during use. Also, the ECM-L1 as a whole works with many existing Sony accessories for the brand’s ECM-77 mics.

The one downside of this neat little package for all you Sony camera-using vloggers and video content creators out there, especially for conducting interviews with live subjects, is that the microphone is rather expensive.

Sony has priced its new lavalier mic at a hefty $279. It offers quality, sure, and for Sony camera owners, it’s a very compatible option, but that’s not cheap. For example, an alternative like the Rode Lavalier II, with great sound quality of its own, costs just $99.

Hopefully, for the extra cost and its specific, durable design features, the ECM-L1 delivers genuinely exceptional sound quality.
